The obliteration claim
======================

The obliteration claim is Donald Trump's statement, made the year before the 2026 Iran war, that the entire Iranian nuclear programme had been destroyed. "That was his word, obliterated," John Kiriakou notes.

Kiriakou reduces the claim to three possibilities: "either he lied, he was tricked, or he's too stupid to know that he wasn't able to obliterate it." The reason the claim matters is that it does not survive contact with the justification later given for the war itself, that Iran was days away from producing a nuclear weapon. If the programme had been obliterated, there was nothing left to be days away from.

He places that justification in a longer sequence: a video circulated during the war compiling every occasion on which Benjamin Netanyahu had told the United States Congress that Iran was six months from a bomb. Kiriakou's assessment of the public response is that the pattern had finally become visible, "Americans are now coming to realization of this. We're aware of these lies."

The targeting basis for the original claim is treated separately at Iranian underground missile silos.
