The Greek neo-Nazi seats
========================

The Greek neo-Nazi seats are the result John Kiriakou singled out from the June 2023 Greek parliamentary election as the sharpest instance of a continent-wide rightward shift.

The count

Kiriakou raised Greece as a correction to the coverage. Much had been made in the press that week about the ascendance of the far right in France and Italy, he said, noting that Italy had a fascist prime minister and that the most popular party in France, if polls were to be believed, was the extreme right party.

But "Greece had its elections two weeks ago, and eight parties won seats in parliament. Six of them are right-wing parties, and four of them are right-wing extremist parties. There are two neo-Nazi parties that won a total of 13 seats in the Greek parliament."

The wider trend

He read the Greek figures as part of a pattern rather than an outlier: "This is a very disturbing trend that we're seeing all over Western Europe. And we already are seeing entrenched right-wing parties in Poland, in Hungary, in the UK, let's be honest."

On the British case he named a specific policy as evidence, see the Rwanda deportations.

Earlier in the same exchange, Kiriakou had summarised the electoral choice now on offer across much of Western Europe as "a right-wing government, a far right-wing government, or an extreme right-wing government. Those are their choices."
