The airbridge
=============

When news broke during a broadcast that the German chancellor had announced an airbridge to Gaza, Ted Rall asked John Kiriakou what an airbridge actually is. Kiriakou's answer supplied both the general definition and the specific guarantee the Gaza case would require.

The definition

An airbridge, Kiriakou said, "is a direct path into another country's airspace where you're guaranteed safety." The essential element is not the aircraft or the cargo but the undertaking: a corridor exists because someone with the capacity to close it has promised not to.

Pressed for an illustration, he gave the concrete case at hand, "Cyprus to Gaza, and the Israeli Air Force won't shoot you down." That is an airbridge, he confirmed.

The formulation is precise about where the power sits. The guarantee is not offered by the country receiving the aid, nor by the country sending it, but by the air force that controls the airspace and would otherwise be the threat.

The announcement that prompted it

The German announcement had been paired, in the reporting Rall summarised, with a restatement of Germany's friendship with Israel and of the need to remember the October 7 attack, a pairing Rall treated with open scorn. Kiriakou supplied the technical definition without comment on the political framing.

His own assessment

Having explained what an airbridge is, Kiriakou made clear he did not think it was the answer. Rall's response to the definition was that "what we need is an open border," and Kiriakou agreed twice over: "That's right. I mean honestly, that's right."

The distinction is substantive rather than rhetorical. An airbridge, on Kiriakou's own definition, presumes a blockade and negotiates a narrow exception to it, and its existence depends entirely on the continuing goodwill of the party enforcing the blockade. An open border removes the need for the guarantee altogether.

Placement

The exchange came at the very end of the broadcast, as the hosts were signing off, and Kiriakou's contribution was almost entirely definitional, an example of a pattern in his broadcast work, where a term of art passes through news coverage undefined and he supplies the meaning before returning the subject to his co-host.
