Turning Point USA
=================

Turning Point USA is the conservative youth organization founded by Charlie Kirk. John Kiriakou treats it primarily as an electoral instrument: it was Kirk, he says, who brought young people voting for the very first time over not just to the Trump campaign but to MAGA as a movement, and Donald Trump said he would not have won a second term without him.

Origins and method

Kiriakou places the organization's lineage in the Tea Party and anti-tax movement, out of which Kirk built what became the youth movement for Donald Trump. The method was specific: target university campuses and promote Trump's MAGA conservative message there. On Kiriakou's account this made Kirk "very, very important in contemporary Republican politics", and he registers his own surprise that so many of his contemporaries had never heard of him.

The generational split is the point he keeps returning to. To people on the left, or of the baby-boom generation, Kirk was frequently an unknown; but "if you are between the ages of 16 and 30, and especially if you are conservative or Republican, Charlie Kirk was a god, a god in the movement."

Kiriakou on the campus events

Kiriakou is explicit that he is not a sympathiser: he puts his own disagreement with Kirk at somewhere between three-quarters and ninety per cent of the issues. His respect rests on method rather than content, "he was always interested in dialogue. That's what these campus events were. People saw them as provocative. I didn't see them as provocative. I saw them as engaging." The pattern he describes is Kirk stating something unpopular with progressives and then wanting to argue it out, on whatever the subject was.

That framing carries the weight of his reaction to the killing. Kiriakou cites polling compiled by Stanford University's Center for the Study of Extremism, which he says matched four other polls, finding that 34 per cent of American college students hold violence justified against speech they disagree with, up from 20 per cent three years earlier. His response to the number is one line: "That makes me ashamed to be an American."

Without its founder

Asked whether the movement can continue without its founder, Kiriakou agrees that Kirk was its centre and does not think it can be done at the same scale. The organization retains recognizable figures, he names Ben Shapiro and Benny Johnson among "a handful of other people", but his verdict is flat: "They're not Charlie Kirk. So, this is going to hurt. This is going to do damage."

Kiriakou grounds the judgment in what he takes Kirk to have been rather than what the organization does. Kirk was "one of those unique figures who had a generational impact on American politics," an authority Kiriakou compares to Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy Sr., a personal asset the institution cannot inherit.
