*The contrast John Kiriakou drew between his Gulf contacts on the second day of the 2026 Iran war — friends in Dubai who were panicked as drones struck the city's landmark towers, and the son of a senior Qatari official who simply chuckled and said 'this is life in the Middle East. We live in a dangerous neighborhood.'*

- **Contacts called:** Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates
- **The Qatari reaction:** A chuckle — "We live in a dangerous neighborhood"
- **The Dubai reaction:** Panic
- **Struck in Dubai:** The Burj Al Arab, set alight by an intercepted drone; the Burj Khalifa, hit twice

**A dangerous neighborhood** is the phrase [John Kiriakou](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/john-kiriakou) brought back from a round of telephone calls to the Gulf on 1 March 2026, in a special weekend edition of his programme called after Iran's supreme leader was killed.

## The calls

*"I spoke to friends of mine in Kuwait Qatar and the United Arab Emirates yesterday."* The first response he reports is the one that struck him as incongruous: *"It's funny. The I talked to a a Qatari the son of a senior Qatari official yesterday and he just kind of chuckled and said, 'Well, this is life in the Middle East. We live in a dangerous neighborhood.'"*[1]

## The contrast

The Emiratis he spoke to took it differently. *"My my friends in Dubai were panicked."*[1]

He supplies what they were reacting to. Of the Burj Al Arab — *"the giant ultra lux hotel that's shaped like a sail"* — he says the Iranians *"sent a drone to to blow up on it. The drone was intercepted and hit in the air. But when it exploded, it exploded against the hotel and set the hotel on fire. The fire was put out but there's significant damage."*[2] Of the world's tallest building: *"The Iranians sent drones to attack the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. They hit it with two drones."*[2]

## What he took from it

Kiriakou treated the airports as the more consequential damage, and the Qatari's equanimity as characteristic rather than callous — the answer of a class of people for whom regional violence is the ordinary weather. He offered the calls at the top of a segment whose conclusion was that Iran could not win the war but could *"put some hurt out on the Gulf Arab states"* — the states whose citizens he had just been talking to.[3]
