John Kiriakou calls Chinese illegal overfishing one of the biggest under-discussed problems in the world, saying China has fished Chilean sea bass nearly to extinction and has heavily overfished both Alaskan and Atlantic cod — species he says should instead be caught by American, Canadian, British, Irish, and Icelandic fleets.[1]
A personal sighting, and a proposed remedy
Kiriakou says he personally saw Chinese fishing vessels in Antarctica while on his honeymoon there, and argues that Western governments need to make joint diplomatic efforts to stop Chinese illegal fishing — including seizing vessels and catch that drift into other nations’ waters.[2]
