*GRU colonel run as a CIA agent by Sandy Grimes, and one of the assets burned by Aldrich Ames. Per John Kiriakou, Polyakov's loss is why Grimes took Ames's treachery personally — the analyst who eventually broke the case had handled one of the men it killed.*

- **Rank:** Colonel, GRU (Soviet military intelligence)
- **Ran by:** [Sandy Grimes](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/sandy-grimes), [CIA](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/cia)
- **Fate:** Among the assets burned by [Aldrich Ames](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/aldrich-ames)

**Dmitry Polyakov** was a colonel in the GRU, Soviet military intelligence, and an agent run by [CIA](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/cia) officer [Sandy Grimes](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/sandy-grimes). He was among the assets betrayed to Moscow by [Aldrich Ames](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/aldrich-ames).[1]

[John Kiriakou](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/john-kiriakou) raises Polyakov to explain motive on the other side of the case. Grimes, he says, *"took Ames's crimes personally"* — Polyakov had been her agent, and he was one of the men Ames burned. The analyst who eventually correlated Ames's meetings with his KGB handler against his bank deposits was not working an abstract counterintelligence puzzle.[2][1]
