# French village LSD bread experiment

*John Kiriakou's account of a compartmented MK-Ultra experiment in which the CIA dosed the only bakery of a small French village he does not name with LSD — in some tellings by breaking in at night and spiking the yeast, in others by contaminating the flour supplied to it — so that the hapless baker sold the whole village an unwitting trip. Kiriakou places it as the sequel to the San Francisco bacterium release and calls it, in the agency's own terms, a successful operation.*

The **French village LSD bread experiment** is [John Kiriakou](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/john-kiriakou)'s account of a compartmented [MK-Ultra](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/mk-ultra) sub-operation. He says CIA operatives targeted a small French village — which he does not name, saying he does not remember it — that had a single bakery supplying the whole community.[1][2] The bread was dosed with LSD, the baker sold it as usual, and the entire village went on an unwitting trip.[3][4]

## The question it was built to answer

In Kiriakou's standard telling the experiment is not an isolated stunt but the next question in a sequence. It follows [the San Francisco bacterium release](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/the-san-francisco-bacterium-release), in which the agency waited for an unusually foggy day and drove pickup trucks around the city blowing a laboratory germ into the air, learning that it had worked when people turned up in emergency rooms with a rare upper respiratory infection.[5][6] Having established that they could reach a population's lungs, *"they wanted to know what it would be like if they could make like everybody in a town crazy."*[7][8]

Told on Megyn Kelly's programme, the link is more explicit still: the agency tried to couple the release of the bacterium with LSD and asked whether it could put the drug into the air, and the French village was where that was tested.[9]

## How it was done

The mechanism varies between tellings, and Kiriakou does not reconcile the versions.

In some accounts the target is the yeast and the entry is a burglary: the village had one bakery that supplied the entire village, *"and we dosed the yeast in the middle of the night. We broke into the bakery and put LSD in the yeast."*[4][3][9][10]

In others there is no break-in at all: the LSD went into the flour that was *supplied* to the only bakery in the village, and the contamination therefore arrived through the supply chain rather than through the door.[7][11][12]

What is constant is the baker, whom Kiriakou consistently exculpates and consistently pities — *"the hapless baker who had no idea"* the flour was full of LSD, who came to work in the morning and made his bread that day exactly as he did every day, and sold it to everybody in the village.[11][4]

## What happened, and how it was scored

Everybody in the village went nuts — for a day or two, in one telling — and Kiriakou reports the internal verdict without softening it: *"that was another, you know, successful operation."*[13] On Fox News he put the same point as a summary of the whole enterprise: LSD in the yeast at the only bakery in the village *"just to see if everybody in the village would go nuts, which they did, of course."*[10]

He is equally clear that success at the level of the individual experiment did not add up to success at the level of the programme. In the end nobody's mind was taken over; the CIA did not bring down Chinese or Russian communism or anything else, and MK-Ultra was a failure.[13][14]

## Compartmentation and denial

Asked directly how many people knew about it at the time, Kiriakou's answer was that the number was *"very, very small"* — it was tightly held, a compartmented programme.[2]

The concealment continued long after the operation. For decades, he says, the agency's line was *"it wasn't us, it wasn't us, it wasn't us"* — and then in the 1990s, *"okay, it was us."*[4][15][3] Kiriakou's verdict on the legality is a single sentence delivered without qualification: *"All of that was illegal."*[11][16]

It is also one of the very few occasions on which he sends an audience outside the government record for confirmation, noting that *"there's even a Wikipedia page about this."*[11][12]

## Why so little is known

The episode stayed secret until 1975, when the [Church Committee](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/church-committee) in the Senate and the [Pike Committee](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/pike-committee) in the House developed the information and called the CIA's leadership to testify under oath in public.[17] Senator Church specifically ordered the Director of Central Intelligence, [Richard Helms](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/richard-helms), not to destroy the documents; Helms went back to headquarters and told the agency to destroy all of them. Eighty-five per cent of the MK-Ultra files were destroyed, and what is known today comes from the surviving fifteen per cent — which, Kiriakou says, is why so many questions about operations like this one still have no answers.[17][18][19]
