*The two rules John Kiriakou gives about food on operations: that a case officer never orders seafood, and above all never shellfish, because a day spent incapacitated by food poisoning makes him useless to the operation, and that a fourteen-hour surveillance can be run on nothing but a container of mango juice.*

- **The rule:** Never order seafood, especially shellfish
- **The reason:** E. coli, Giardia or Shigella takes an officer out of the operation
- **The long day:** Fourteen hours without food, sipped through on mango juice

**Operational eating** covers the practical rules [John Kiriakou](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/john-kiriakou) gives for food while working an operation for the [CIA](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/cia).

The first is about going without. There were days, he says, when he ate nothing at all. On one operation he knew in advance that fourteen hours would pass before he could eat, and the only thing available to him was a large container of mango juice; he bought it and sipped it across the whole span, which kept the hunger off.[1] Presenting this to a nutritionist, he anticipated the objection himself, *"Pure sugar"*, and settled for it being better than nothing.[2]

The second is a prohibition. Asked what a CIA officer would never order in a restaurant during an operation, his answer was *"Seafood, but especially shellfish,"* on the grounds that it is a common source of illness. The consequence, not the discomfort, is the point: an officer who picks up E. coli, Giardia or Shigella is *"flat on your back"* with a fever and cannot take part, at which point *"you're no good to anybody."*[2][3]

A related detail belongs to the end of his case rather than to fieldwork. Asked what his last meal before sentencing was and what his first meal afterwards had been, Kiriakou answered that they were the same meal: a Japanese yellow curry made from scratch by his now former wife, with cubes of pork, potato, carrot, celery and peas over rice.[4][5]
