*The stateless people John Kiriakou calls generationally pro-American, he escorted visiting Kurdish delegations around Washington as a young analyst and bristled at officials who talked down to them. In his telling the Kurds were the only genuine opposition inside Saddam's Iraq, the only faction of the exile circus that ever amounted to anything (Jalal Talabani ended up president of Iraq), the victims of Saddam's chemical weapons and of a no-fly zone that forgot to ban helicopters, and the common enemy that actually united Turkey and ISIS.*

- **Relations (per Kiriakou):** Pro-American for generations, in both Syria and Iraq
- **Under Saddam:** The only real internal opposition; gassed with chemical weapons
- **Post-war Iraq:** Jalal Talabani of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan became president
- **Turkey angle:** Turkey and ISIS shared no quarrel, except a common enemy in the Kurds

The **Kurds** are the stateless people of the Iraq–Syria–Turkey–Iran borderlands and, in [John Kiriakou](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/john-kiriakou)'s telling, America's most reliable, and most casually insulted, friends in the region.

## "Pro-American for generations"

The Kurds are a different issue from every other faction in Syria, Kiriakou says: the U.S. has long-standing relations with Kurds in both Syria and Iraq, and they have been generally pro-American for decades, for generations.[1][2] As a young officer he saw that relationship up close, Kurdish delegations came to Washington for high-level meetings all the time, with Kiriakou often the notetaker or escort. What he remembers is a senior official who *"always talked to them like they had half a brain"*, insulting, with mocking terms for the Kurds that struck him as racist.[3][4]

## Under Saddam

Inside [Saddam Hussein](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/saddam-hussein)'s Iraq, opposition meant a bullet, except among the Kurds, who in Kiriakou's paraphrase wanted no part of the exile schemes: *"We're not working with any of these people. We're going to make Kurdistan and we're going to live happily ever after, and that's where the oil is anyway."*[5] Saddam had used chemical weapons against them, for Kiriakou, the unambiguous part of the WMD record.[6] After the Gulf War, the no-fly zones established to protect the Kurds in the north and the Shia in the south carried a lethal flaw: they banned fixed-wing aircraft and said nothing about helicopters.[7] Sanctions, meanwhile, crushed Kurds, Shia, women, and children while Saddam's clan and power structure suffered nothing.[8]

Of the entire CIA-funded opposition circus, he notes, only the Kurds ever amounted to anything: Jalal Talabani, head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, ended up president of Iraq.[9] In the 1990s the U.S. worked with them in the autonomous north, and when Jordan refused overflight clearance for supplying them, flights had to cross Israel and loop out over the Mediterranean to get there.[10][11]

## The Turkey problem

Kiriakou's explanation for Turkey's strange passivity toward [ISIS](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/isis): the Turks had no inherent beef with the group, which had never attacked Turkey, what they shared was a common enemy in the Kurds.[12] His humanitarian bottom line, even while opposing the wars: he would hate to simply abandon the region's innocents, *"the Kurds desperately need some help, even if it's just medicine and food aid."*[13]

## On independence

Asked in March 2026 whether the Kurdish people would one day achieve independence and full freedom, Kiriakou answered in two registers at once, belief and doubt. *"I believe so. I sure hope so."*[14]

He treated the position as long settled between himself and [Ted Rall](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/ted-rall), something they had returned to *"a minute here and a minute there for a long time"*: *"You and I both love the Kurds. You and I both support Kurdish independence."*[14]

The expectation is separate from the wish, and he did not blur them: *"I don't see it happening, you know, Not soon."* What he came back to was entitlement rather than likelihood, *"But I sure hope someday the Kurds have their their independence. They deserve it. They deserve it. It's been promised to them"*, by the biggest powers, and many times.[14]

## What independence would have to include

Asked in February 2026 what the Kurds should actually do to obtain independence, Kiriakou began by conceding that one group of them may not want it urgently. *"At least in Iraq, the situation that they have now is acceptable to them in that they have autonomy and uh they have some control over the northern oil fields."*[15]

His own position was unaffected by that. *"But I I still I still support, I've always supported Kurdish independence."*[16]

What he added is the qualification that distinguishes his position from the Iraqi status quo: *"It should be a a an inclusive Kurdish independence and when I say inclusive, I mean including the Syrian Kurds, the Turkish Kurds, the Iranian Kurds."*[16]

An inclusive settlement would require four states to give up territory rather than one to formalise an arrangement it already tolerates, which is why, elsewhere, he says he does not expect to see it soon while continuing to say it is owed.
