**Mahmoud al-Mabhouh** was a senior figure in Hamas assassinated by the [MOSSAD](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/mossad) in a Dubai hotel room in January 2010. The operation has been studied by intelligence services worldwide for its operational craft and is described by [John Kiriakou](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/john-kiriakou) as a *"classic"* of Israeli intelligence work. Israel has never officially claimed responsibility.[1][2]

## Operation

Approximately 26 members of the assassination team were identified by the Dubai government's CCTV system — a network described by Kiriakou as the most comprehensive in the world, exceeding even the People's Republic of China's. None were apprehended.[2]

## The locked door

The signature tradecraft puzzle of the operation is the question of how the assassination team locked the hotel-room door from the inside after the killing — leaving the body to be discovered only when the hotel staff was unable to gain entry. *"We studied that for a long time. They killed a guy in a hotel room in Dubai and then after they killed him, they were somehow able to lock the door from the inside of the hotel room. … And we tried, like, magnets and different ways. We couldn't figure out how they did it."* The eventual exfiltration was via the balcony.[3][1][4]

## CCTV question

The hotel's external CCTV footage of the team became one of the most extensively studied surveillance records in modern intelligence history. The question of why the Dubai CCTV system did not foil the operation has been a subject of speculation regarding whether the cameras were Israeli-supplied; per Kiriakou, who toured Dubai's underground monitoring facility in his subsequent role at the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the cameras were in fact German-supplied — manufactured by Siemens.[2][5]
