**Ola Bini** is a Swedish programmer and activist — *"they use the word hacktivist"* — and a personal friend of [Julian Assange](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/julian-assange), arrested in Ecuador in 2019 on a charge, as [John Kiriakou](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/john-kiriakou) renders it, *"of having something to do with attacking the integrity of computer systems."*[1]

Kiriakou attributes the arrest directly to the head of state rather than to any prosecutor: *"his arrest was ordered by the president of Ecuador, Lenín Moreno, who to me is one of the biggest traitors that we've encountered in this entire experience."* The judgement turns on the name. *"He's named Lenin because he's supposed to be a communist, right? His parents were communists, named him after Vladimir Ilyich Lenin. And he just couldn't get on his knees fast enough in front of the United States and do the US's bidding."*[1][2]

The detention is what Kiriakou returns to. *"He was arrested in 2019. He was supposed to be held for 90 days. And I'll tell you what, that 90 days came and went. And he's still under arrest. We don't really get much in the way of news about him."* By the time of this 2022 conversation he could report only a pre-trial hearing about eighteen months earlier and a trial supposedly set for June — *"but there's just no real movement in this case at all."*[2][3]

He puts the position as a question rather than an analysis: *"can you imagine being held in an Ecuadorian prison without any real charges, and you don't have any idea when or even if you'll actually go on trial? You could just be there forever."*[3]
