Pan Quake is, per John Kiriakou, an open-source, completely transparent, nonprofit social-media platform intended as an alternative to Twitter. Based in Iceland and powered by geothermal energy — “powered by, you know, a geyser” — the platform was designed to have no environmental footprint. Kiriakou says he was asked to serve as a brand ambassador after having tech-savvy friends, including NSA whistleblower Tom Drake, review it and vouch for its legitimacy; the platform was incorporated with lawyers in Luxembourg.[1]
Pan Quake was permanently suspended from Twitter without explanation. Its Icelandic bank account was then frozen, with the bank informing the platform this had been done at the request of the FBI, reportedly because Pan Quake’s user base included supporters of Julian Assange.[2]
