Souda Bay Vulnerability and Nasser on American Decisions

Two observations John Kiriakou has made on U.S. Mediterranean strategy and decision-making — a U.S. military contact's warning that Souda Bay in Crete, the nearest major port able to host a U.S. aircraft carrier like the USS Gerald Ford, is a possible vulnerability; and Kiriakou's favorite quote from Gamal Abdel Nasser, that Americans never make clear-cut stupid decisions, only complicated ones.

Souda Bay

John Kiriakou relays a concern raised to him by a U.S. military contact about Souda Bay in Crete, home to a major American naval presence and the nearest major port capable of accommodating a U.S. aircraft carrier such as the USS Gerald Ford. The contact told him, “we really need to be worried about Souda Bay in Crete,” and Kiriakou agrees the location deserves concern as a possible vulnerability.[1]

The Nasser quote

Asked about why U.S. agencies pursue policies seemingly contrary to American national interest, Kiriakou cites his favorite quote, from former Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser: “The thing about you Americans is you never make clear-cut stupid decisions. You only make complicated stupid decisions, which makes us wonder if there is something to them which we are missing.”[2]
