*The July 2026 incident in which Ukrainian drones, unleashed by Volodymyr Zelensky as part of a declared 40-day drone war on June 25 to make the Russian people feel pain, strayed onto an Iranian ship in the Caspian Sea and killed an Iranian sailor. John Kiriakou treats Zelensky's subsequent attempt to spin the mistake into a request that the United States expand its Iran war into the Caspian as a probable Netanyahu suggestion, and Iran's decision to accept an apology and reparations as evidence that Iran no longer needs the mistake to be a war.*

- **Drone-war order:** [Volodymyr Zelensky](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/volodymyr-zelensky), June 25, 2026, 40-day drone campaign to *"take the pain to the Russian people"*
- **Strike location:** The Caspian Sea
- **Target hit:** An Iranian ship (Ukraine had assumed Russian)
- **Casualty:** One Iranian sailor killed
- **Zelensky's follow-up:** Went to Washington to ask the U.S. to expand the Iran war into the Caspian and Russia, refused
- **Iranian response:** Prepared intermediate-range missile strikes on Ukraine; then accepted an Iranian apology with reparations
- **Kiriakou's speculation:** The pivot to a Middle East front may have followed a suggestion from [Benjamin Netanyahu](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/benjamin-netanyahu)

**The Caspian drone strike** is [John Kiriakou](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/john-kiriakou)'s name for the July 2026 incident in which Ukrainian drones, sent out under a declared 40-day drone campaign against Russia, hit an Iranian ship in the Caspian Sea, killed a sailor, and produced a brief window in which Kiev tried to turn the mistake into a joint U.S.–Ukraine casus belli against Iran.

## Kiriakou's read

Sitting on Judge Andrew Napolitano's intelligence-community roundtable at the end of July 2026, Kiriakou treated the pivot Zelensky attempted as behavioural rather than diplomatic. *"That's exactly how this played out. I'm too, this may have been in part as a result of let's say a suggestion from [Benjamin Netanyahu](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/benjamin-netanyahu) that, you know, the conflict in Iran is expanding. It's now including the Houthis in Yemen, now the Egyptians, the Jordanians, the Iraqis. You want to be on the right side of this. Maybe you jump in on our side and help us out even symbolically."*[1][2]

He read Zelensky's calculus as image, not policy. *"[Zelensky](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/volodymyr-zelensky) looks like a tough guy. He hits an Iranian ship, doesn't make an apology, but there's no real follow-through. And all of a sudden it makes Ukraine a player in the Middle East at least for a minute."*[2]
