## The numbers

The expectation, he notes, would have been a party swimming in cash after months of public anger over [Donald Trump](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/donald-trump), soaring petrol prices and a deeply unpopular war with Iran. Instead the Republican National Committee was sitting on $130 million in cash and the Democratic Party was $2 million in debt.[1][2]

The party was short enough that its headquarters had adopted what Kiriakou calls a new gambit to mask the severity of the problem: asking vendors not to send bills until after the elections were over. It had also used the headquarters building itself as collateral for a loan.[2][3]

## The leadership

Earlier that month the committee's chairman threw his telephone at a junior staff member's desk during a heated confrontation, prompting a formal complaint to the DNC's human resources department. The incident was witnessed by half a dozen people, and by Kiriakou's account the chairman was by then paralysed by the fear of leaks, which kept coming.[3][4]

Kiriakou's professional comment is dry: *"If I know one thing about leak control, intimidating your staff as a result of paranoia is not a good way to do it."*[4]

He ties the money and the management to the forecast. Two and a half weeks earlier the predictions had given the Democrats a House majority of twenty-two to twenty-five seats; by the time he spoke the consensus had fallen to between five and eleven. Redistricting, he argues, cannot carry all of that, the rest is bad leadership.[3]
