*John Kiriakou's account of dismissing the idea that the United States would seize Greenland on a podcast one afternoon, and hearing Stephen Miller say the opposite on CNN an hour later, after which he treated the threat to a NATO member as a legitimate problem, and looked to Emmanuel Macron rather than Keir Starmer to stop it.*

- **Kiriakou's answer that day:** "I made a face and just went, No"
- **An hour later:** Stephen Miller on CNN saying the United States would take Greenland
- **Miller's framing, per Kiriakou:** An integral part of the United States and a security necessity
- **Who intervened:** Keir Starmer, publicly
- **Kiriakou's candidate for adult in the room:** Emmanuel Macron

**The Greenland prediction he got wrong** is an episode [John Kiriakou](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/john-kiriakou) recounts against himself, in the middle of a discussion of an interview Stephen Miller gave to CNN.

## What Miller said

Kiriakou summarised the interview as containing *"some incredibly provocative things"*, among them the description of treaties in which countries promise not to invade each other as *"international nicities"* that can be ignored, which Kiriakou answered with *"that's exactly right"* when told these are promises that have underpinned international affairs for millennia.[1]

On Greenland itself he reported the claim without accepting it: Miller said *"the United States will will invade Greenland, we will take Greenland. that it he called it an integral part of the United States which is preposterous but it's an integral part of the United States and it is a necessity for the security and safety of the United States. We already have a military base there. We have for decades."*[2]

His structural objection is that the target is an allied country: *"it's like he's preparing us for an American invasion of a NATO country. A NATO country. This is unprecedented."*[3]

## The self-correction

Asked how serious the threat was, Kiriakou answered by describing being caught out. *"Yesterday I was asked about this in a podcast and I made a face and just went, 'No.' I said, 'We're not going to take Greenland.' And then an hour later, Steven Miller's on CNN saying, 'We're going to take Greenland.' So I I think this is this is like a legit problem."*[4]

## Who stops it

He reported that the British prime minister had been forced into the open the previous afternoon, *"Kier Starmer, the British prime minister, had to come out and say, 'Look, you guys have to stop. You can't have Greenland. You can't invade Greenland. You can't attack Denmark. We've got to come down on the side of the Danes.'"*, and read the intervention as evidence that quiet diplomacy had failed: *"But then with this uh interview by Steven Miller, you know, back channels aren't working."*[5]

Asked who could actually restrain Washington, Kiriakou named the French president and said he was not joking. *"Is it Emanuel Macron? Maybe. I'm not even kidding"*, because *"he's the one who's been speaking intelligently about Venezuela,"* and because *"I don't think Trump feels one way or the other about Kier Starmer, but I think Trump likes and respects"* Macron.[6][7]
