*A detail John Kiriakou recalls from his years as a congressional staffer, that Mitch McConnell lived in a townhouse four doors from the Hart Senate Office Building, roughly a hundred and fifty feet away, and took a limousine to work every morning anyway, to be booed by staff as he passed.*

- **Subject:** Mitch McConnell
- **Residence:** A townhouse four doors from the Hart Senate Office Building
- **Distance:** About 150 feet
- **Mode of travel:** A limousine, every morning
- **Staff response, per Kiriakou:** Booing as he drove past

**The hundred-and-fifty-foot limousine** is an anecdote [John Kiriakou](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/john-kiriakou) tells about Mitch McConnell, appended to a much harsher account of the senator's role in the collapse of a set of pardons.

## The grievance

The story arrives at the end of a passage about clemency. Kiriakou's account is that Donald Trump had intended to pardon [Julian Assange](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/julian-assange), Edward Snowden and Kiriakou himself, and that McConnell, who, Kiriakou notes, *"didn't know me"*, warned that pardoning the first two would cost the president control of the Republican caucus in an impeachment vote. *"so he dropped our Pardons."*[1]

What follows is a wish stated in the open, and then immediately qualified as personal: *"Mitch McConnell I'd like to smack in his Turtle face too but that's just me."*[1]

## The commute

The anecdote itself is from his own years working on Capitol Hill. *"when I was working on the hill we used to make fun of him because he lives in this townhouse that's literally four doors down from the heart Senate Office Building so he lives like literally 150 feet from his office and he used to take a limo every morning the 150 feet and we would boo him as he as he drove by like what a loser."*[2]

Kiriakou offers it without moral framing; the ridicule is the point, and the collective *"we"* places him among the staffers doing the booing rather than reporting it at a distance. It sits in his account of Washington alongside his other observations of senatorial habit gathered while he served on the [Senate Foreign Relations Committee](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/prosecutorial-careerism) and on the Hill more generally.
