*Pressed on controlled-demolition theories about the World Trade Center, John Kiriakou refuses the premise while conceding the limits of his own expertise — he was inside the CIA's Counterterrorism Center before the attacks, and says he has never seen any evidence that 9/11 was an inside job.*

- **Question put:** Controlled demolition of the towers
- **Kiriakou's disclaimer:** "I'm not an engineer. I'm not an architect."
- **His position:** Al-Qaeda carried out the attacks
- **Evidence seen of an inside job:** None

Kiriakou is a persistent critic of the CIA who nonetheless declines to endorse the best-known conspiracy account of the September 11 attacks. Put to him in interview — with the claim that demolition experts had said no building falls vertically like that, and that explosions had been reported on air — his answer separates the parts of the question he can speak to from the parts he cannot.

## The disclaimer

He begins by conceding the limits of his competence. "I'm not an engineer. I'm not an architect." [1] On the specific physical claim he does not offer a counter-argument: "I can't respond to the physics of the towers collapsing upon themselves." [2]

## What he does claim

What he offers instead is standing. "I was inside the CIA's Counterterrorism Center in the year and a half prior to the 9/11 attacks." On that basis he makes two flat statements: "I know that Al-Qaeda did those attacks. I know that Al-Qaeda flew planes into those buildings." [1]

On the inside-job question he is categorical about the absence of evidence rather than about the physics. "I have never seen any evidence ever that this was an inside job or that there were explosives planted inside the buildings. Never have I seen any evidence." He allows that he has heard the speculation, and characterises it as exactly that. "But I know that this was not an inside job." [2]

## Alongside his other criticisms

The refusal does not soften Kiriakou's account of the failure itself. In the same conversation he calls the attacks "the greatest intelligence failure in American history," and states the reason without hedging: "3,000 Americans died in one day because the CIA didn't do its job." [3]

He uses that failure to explain what followed rather than to imply complicity — a desire for revenge, an effort to kill or capture as many Al-Qaeda figures as possible, and, alongside the aim of disrupting the next attack, "a desire to make them suffer." [3]
