*A theory advanced by well-regarded podcasters during the 2026 Iran war that Benjamin Netanyahu had been killed and the fact concealed — his son's seven-day silence read as sitting shiva. John Kiriakou recounts it collapsing when Netanyahu gave a press conference, and sets it against the real decapitation campaign against the IRGC.*

- **The claim:** That [Netanyahu](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/benjamin-netanyahu) was dead and it was being concealed
- **The evidence offered:** His son went quiet on Twitter for exactly seven days
- **How it ended:** Netanyahu gave a press conference
- **Kiriakou's word for it:** "Oops"
- **Real decapitations:** The head of the IRGC, the minister in charge of it, and its spokesman

**The Netanyahu death rumour** was a claim circulated during the [2026 Iran war](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/2026-iran-war) that [Benjamin Netanyahu](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/benjamin-netanyahu) had been killed and his death concealed. [John Kiriakou](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/john-kiriakou) recounted it as an object lesson in how quickly credibility could be spent during the war.

The case, made by *"a couple of podcasters who until yesterday were highly respected,"* ran that Netanyahu had not been seen; that his son had gone quiet on Twitter for exactly seven days, which was read as sitting shiva; and that the son's return to posting marked the end of the mourning period.[1] Kiriakou's account of the refutation is one word long: Netanyahu gave a press conference. *"Oops."*[1]

His own explanation for the absence was mundane — *"There are plenty of bunkers in Israel. They're all over Israel. Everybody has a bunker."*[2] A fortnight later he was tracking reports placing Netanyahu abroad instead; see [Netanyahu in hiding](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/netanyahu-in-hiding).

## The real decapitation campaign

The rumour sat alongside a genuine sequence of killings. The United States announced that it had killed the IRGC's spokesman, following the head of the IRGC and the minister in charge of it.[3][1]

Kiriakou's forecast for the war as a whole, given in the same passage, was that *"it's worse than it was yesterday. This is not going to end quickly. It's not going to end easily or nicely. It's going to be hideous."*[3] The theory behind the killings is treated at [the house of cards theory](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/the-house-of-cards-theory).
