*Donald Trump's statement that the Iranian nuclear programme had been "obliterated", and John Kiriakou's reading of it. Kiriakou offers three possibilities — the president lied, was tricked, or did not understand what had been achieved — and notes the claim's incompatibility with the later justification that Iran was days away from a weapon.*

- **The word:** "Obliterated"
- **Kiriakou's three options:** He lied, he was tricked, or he was too stupid to know
- **The contradiction:** An obliterated programme cannot be days from a weapon

**The obliteration claim** is [Donald Trump](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/donald-trump)'s statement, made the year before the [2026 Iran war](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/2026-iran-war), that the entire Iranian nuclear programme had been destroyed. *"That was his word, obliterated,"* [John Kiriakou](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/john-kiriakou) notes.[1]

Kiriakou reduces the claim to three possibilities: *"either he lied, he was tricked, or he's too stupid to know that he wasn't able to obliterate it."*[1] The reason the claim matters is that it does not survive contact with the justification later given for the war itself — that Iran was days away from producing a nuclear weapon.[1] If the programme had been obliterated, there was nothing left to be days away from.

He places that justification in a longer sequence: a video circulated during the war compiling every occasion on which [Benjamin Netanyahu](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/benjamin-netanyahu) had told the United States Congress that Iran was six months from a bomb.[2] Kiriakou's assessment of the public response is that the pattern had finally become visible — *"Americans are now coming to realization of this. We're aware of these lies."*[2]

The targeting basis for the original claim is treated separately at [Iranian underground missile silos](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/iranian-underground-missile-silos).
