*John Kiriakou's summary of what the first Epstein tranches actually contained — investigative documents, grand jury testimony and snapshots taken by Epstein and his friends — and the two photographs that dominated the early coverage.*

- **Categories released:** Investigative documents; grand jury testimony; snapshots
- **Photographers:** Epstein and his friends
- **Images that dominated coverage:** Bill Clinton in a hot tub; Prince Andrew across the laps of five young women
- **Deadline:** A Friday deadline imposed by Congress

Midway through his December 2025 interview on the [Jeffrey Epstein](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/jeffrey-epstein) documents, [John Kiriakou](https://www.kiripedia.org/wiki/john-kiriakou) read out a wire report that had been published about an hour earlier, describing a group of alleged victims accusing the Department of Justice of violations of the law in its partial release.

## What was in the release

The report he read described the Justice Department as having released thousands of files ranging from investigative documents to grand jury testimony to snapshots taken by Epstein and his friends, while stating that it would fail to release all the files by the Friday deadline Congress had imposed.[1]

## What the coverage went to

Kiriakou's own comment concerned the imbalance in what followed. A great deal of reporting in the preceding forty-eight hours, he observed, had focused on the snapshots. *"We've all now seen the gross picture of Bill Clinton in a hot tub and Prince Andrew laying across, you know, the laps of five young women."*[1]

His question was about everything else. *"What about things like grand jury testimony, which is normally off-limits to absolutely everybody? What about these investigative files? Are we learning anything new about this case?"*[1]

## The answer, and where it led

The reply he received went to a 1996 FBI report in which the artist Maria Farmer had, on the guest's account, reported Epstein — a document headed as a child pornography investigation. That thread became the interview's central claim: that the federal cover-up dates not from the 2008 non-prosecution agreement but from the Clinton-era FBI.

Kiriakou's own contribution here is narrower and worth separating from it. He is recording that a release produced under statutory compulsion was received by the press as a photograph story, and asking, without answering, whether the documentary material underneath it had added anything at all.
