# The Texas Muslim development

## The scheme

A friend in Texas had written to tell him about the kerfuffle. A group of wealthy Muslims — most of them doctors — had bought a large empty piece of land and were developing it: twenty-five or thirty giant houses to be built, with a mosque at the centre. They were pitching the development to other Muslims, other doctors and lawyers and engineers and professionals.[1]

## The reaction and his answer

In Kiriakou's account people panicked to the point that the governor weighed in — *"Oh my god, it's going to be jihad in Texas."*[2]

His reply is deflationary on every axis. *"No, Dr Muhammad, the brain surgeon, is not going to make a holy war against you."* The development is, in his reading, simply about Muslims wanting to live around other Muslims — and, he adds, they are all millionaires, they are all going to have nice houses, and they are all going to contribute to the tax base.[2][3]

He places the episode inside a category of American disputes he thinks are manufactured: an issue *"that is dividing Americans unnecessarily,"* which he says he intends to keep explaining in plain English because it is not something anybody should be afraid of.[3]
