Donald Trump is the stressor. I blame all the institutions that are supposed to serve as checks and balances."*[1] His list of failures is comprehensive and includes the one he had defended longest. *"The so-called opposition party, the Democrats; the legislative branch, which is basically not doing anything; and even a lot of the judiciary, which for years I've said was the last best hope. They're rolling now."*[1] ## The example *"Just as an example, did you see this kid? I say kid because he just turned 30, that Donald Trump had named to be the head of the Office of Special Counsel."*[1] The withdrawal had come the day before. *"He withdrew yesterday, because of text messages he had sent friends of his that just were made public, in which he admitted to having a Nazi streak."*[2] The host's response was a joke about universality, who among us has not had a Nazi period, which Kiriakou did not take up.[2] ## The other objection What Kiriakou added instead is the part of his reaction that has nothing to do with the texts, and it is the more revealing half. *"Plus, man, if you've been out of school for six years, you have no business heading up an office at the Department of Justice."*[2][3] The Office of Special Counsel is the federal body responsible, among other duties, for protecting whistleblowers from retaliation, an institution whose competence Kiriakou has personal reason to care about, and whose weakness he has described elsewhere as one of the reasons the legal protections on paper are worth so little in practice. He does not make that connection explicit here.
