John Kiriakou recounts that Falwell called him shortly after he blew the whistle on the CIA torture program and offered him a post lecturing at the university’s Jesse Helms School of Government.[1][2] Kiriakou says he warned Falwell they probably disagreed on 99% of the issues; Falwell answered, “we want you because torture is not Christian.” Kiriakou took the job and says he loved every second of it, even as they argued over the role of evangelical Christians in the Middle East.[3] He served as an adjunct professor of intelligence studies at Liberty University from 2008 to 2012; in that telling, he attributes the “torture is not Christian” line to the dean who called to offer him the job on Falwell’s behalf.[4]
