Jon Stewart

American broadcaster, on whom John Kiriakou publicly accepted a correction from a viewer, and about whom he tells a single unflattering story from their one meeting.

A viewer challenged Kiriakou’s earlier description of Jon Stewart as a Zionist, listing the guests Stewart has platformed and the politicians he has criticised while granting that he is “no lefty.” Kiriakou accepted it without argument: “Okay, I stand corrected.”[1]

He then supplied the reservation that survives the correction, which is about character rather than politics and rests on one encounter. “I met him one time, and the visit — I mean, was in his office, and the visit just left a sour taste in my mouth because he had these Emmys just kind of strewn on the couch where you couldn’t sit on the couch cuz there were Emmys just randomly laying across them.”[1][2]

What turned an oddity into a judgement was the explanation he was given on the way out. Having remarked that Stewart must have so many Emmys that he simply threw them on the couch, “the intern said, ‘No. He loves those Emmys. He does that to make it look like — ah, it’s no big deal. I just win these Emmys, and I don’t even care. I just throw them on my couch.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, he’s one of these guys, a poser.’”[2][3]
