Miranda rights — the police warning that a suspect has the right to remain silent and to an attorney — became a point of contention in the arrest of NSA whistleblower Reality Winner, who discussed her case — including her prior work as a contractor linguist at Fort Gordon — on John Kiriakou’s show. Winner says the FBI agents who arrested her, Agent Garrick and Taylor, did not say “you are under arrest” or read her the Miranda rights familiar from television police procedurals.[1]
Winner states plainly: “I’ve never had my Miranda rights read to me. Never.” She describes the arrest itself as unusually informal — the agents did not handcuff her, telling her instead, “We’re going to have to take you in,” before gesturing her toward an unmarked vehicle.[2]
