The au pair who became a Stockholm police officer

A young Swedish woman who lived with John Kiriakou and his then wife in Arlington, Virginia for a year around 2016. The daughter of Syrian Christian refugees, she went home to join the Stockholm police and, because she spoke fluent Swedish, English and Arabic, was posted to community outreach in a minority neighbourhood — a placement Kiriakou took at the time as evidence of a progressive Sweden he later concluded he had misread.

The au pair who became a Stockholm police officer is a story John Kiriakou tells against himself, as the measure of how badly he had misjudged Sweden before visiting it in 2026.

The year in Arlington

About a decade earlier, Kiriakou and his then wife had an au pair live with them for a year in Arlington, Virginia. She was a Swedish citizen but the daughter of refugees from Syria — Christian refugees from Syria.[1]

When the year was up she went home, excited, to become a police officer in Stockholm. Because she spoke fluent Swedish, fluent English and fluent Arabic, the force made her a policewoman in a minority neighbourhood, doing community outreach. Kiriakou’s reaction at the time was uncomplicated: “Oh, that’s so nice. That’s so progressive. Good for her.” She has, he adds, had a successful career.[1]

What he learned later

The point of the anecdote is the assumption embedded in that reaction. Kiriakou says he had simply been under the impression that Sweden was “all, you know, milk and honey and everybody was happy and they’re all going to live happily ever after,” and that this is not the case at all — that he had no idea how much the average Swede resents the country’s refugees.[2]

The same trip produced the wider surprise he reports about Scandinavia: that a solidly neo-Nazi far right exists in Norway and Sweden, with swastika banners in the street and calls for the expulsion or execution of refugees, and that he had not known it was there.[3]
