The family that spans the spectrum is how John Kiriakou introduced his Greek relatives on 19 November 2025, when a viewer asked what was happening in Greece and why the new American ambassador was being so warmly received there.[1]
The two ends
Kiriakou’s answer began by establishing that he has sources across the whole Greek political range, and that they are all relations. “So I have family in Greece that span the political spectrum.”[2]
The left-hand end is specific and senior. “My grandmother’s first cousin was a member of the politburo of the Communist Party of Greece.”[2]
The right-hand end is equally specific. “And on the other side, I’ve got a relatively close cousin who was elected governor of the Dodecanese Islands from the Conservative Party.”[2]
And the middle: “So, and I’ve got everybody in between.”[2]
The thing they agree on
The point of the inventory is the unanimity that follows it. “And they all love Kimberly Guilfoyle. I don’t understand it.”[2]
He reports that some of them have offered him an explanation — that the enthusiasm is an extension of something else — but the transcript breaks for an advertisement mid-sentence and he does not return to complete the thought when the programme resumes.[2]
Why the family matters to the corpus
Kiriakou’s commentary on Greece is unusually confident compared with his commentary on other countries where he never served, and this passage is the reason. He is not reasoning from wire copy but from a family network that reaches, by his account, from the leadership of the Communist Party to an elected Conservative office-holder in the Aegean.
It also complicates the picture of him as a straightforwardly left-wing commentator. The Greek relatives are described without embarrassment on either flank, the Conservative governor is “relatively close”, and the anecdote’s punchline is his own inability to explain what his family believes.
