The letter to Larry Nassar

The letter from Jeffrey Epstein to the convicted USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar that John Kiriakou singled out from the released documents, in which Epstein wrote that he would have gone home by the time it arrived and blamed everything on Donald Trump.

Of the material released in the December 2025 tranches, the item John Kiriakou chose to raise first with his guest was a piece of correspondence between two convicted sex offenders.

The correspondents

The letter was written by Jeffrey Epstein to Dr Larry Nassar, whom Kiriakou identified as the doctor for the women’s gymnastics team, the US Olympic team, and as a man convicted of “dozens and dozens, maybe hundreds of counts of child molestation and sexual abuse.”[1]

What it says

Kiriakou quotes one line and summarises the rest. Epstein wrote, in his paraphrase, “by the time you receive this, I will have gone home by now” — and then, in Kiriakou’s account, “he just goes on to blame everything on Donald Trump of all things.”[1]

His question to the guest was put twice, in two registers: what do you make of that, and — “or maybe even more importantly, what should the country make of that?”[1]

The answer

The reply he received turned on Epstein’s credibility as a witness against anyone. Epstein plainly had antipathy toward Donald Trump, the guest said, and in the released emails calls him the worst scumbag he ever met — but Epstein was himself “very far from a paragon of morality,” and the accusation was the kettle calling the pot black. The same emails, on the guest’s reading, undercut Trump’s claim to have severed the friendship in 2003 or 2004, showing that it continued.

Kiriakou pressed from there to the question that occupied the rest of the interview: what a president confident of his own innocence gains by withholding documents he campaigned on releasing.
