The Truth Social announcement is how, in John Kiriakou’s account, the American public learned that the 2026 war had begun — and his objection is as much to the absence of what followed as to the medium itself.
How it was done
Asked on the programme why the president was still not speaking to the American people, Kiriakou began with the timing and the platform. “You know, when he announced the the attack, the start of the attack, he did it at 2:00 in the morning… on Truth Social.”[1][2]
What did not happen is the substance of the complaint. “He did not address the American people. He did not stand at the podium in the East Room of the White House and and make an announcement that essentially we’re at war. He did it on Truth Social.”[2]
What did not follow
Kiriakou then describes the pattern since. “And you’re right, he’s only been going between Washington and Mar-a-Lago, back and forth. He has not begun crisscrossing the country to explain why he decided to send young American men and women uh into battle and put their lives at risk.”[2]
His judgement on the obligation is stated as a debt: “He owes that… to the American people.”[2][3]
The explanation offered on the programme
The suggestion put to Kiriakou was that the silence was deliberate — that the absence of a primetime Oval Office address reflected a wish to keep the war “kind of a side project” rather than a defining feature of the presidency. Kiriakou accepted the reading and rejected its premise: “Right. But but you can’t it can’t not be.”[3]
Where it fits
The complaint belongs to a broader argument Kiriakou makes about the war’s authorship. In his account the policy was being run by Marco Rubio, holding both the State Department and the National Security Adviser’s job, over the reported objections of the Vice President, the Director of National Intelligence and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs — a war, in other words, that had never been argued for in public because it had never had to be argued for in private either.[4]
