The White House tip

A week and a half before the 2026 attack on Iran, John Kiriakou said publicly that a friend at the White House had told him the decision to attack had been made and that it would come the following Monday or Tuesday. A podcaster mocked him for it — how could a man twenty years out of the CIA know that? On the morning the strikes began, Kiriakou answered: people with access do call, because they are opposed to the war.

The White House tip is the source and the defence of a forecast John Kiriakou made roughly ten days before the United States and Israel attacked Iran on 27 February 2026, and which he was publicly ridiculed for making.

On the Saturday morning after the first strikes, Ted Rall reminded him that he had called it weeks ahead. Kiriakou answered by way of the criticism instead. “One of our viewers very generously um uh emailed me last week to say that there was a there was a podcaster talking [expletive] about me. And maybe I should uh respond. So I looked at it and he was really talking a lot of [expletive] about me.”[1][2]

What he had said

The claim being attacked was specific rather than atmospheric. “It was about what I said a week ago a week and a half ago that a friend of mine at the White House said that a decision had been made to attack Iran, that it would come this past Monday or Tuesday.”[2]

He did not claim to have been exactly right. “Obviously it was delayed a few days, but that the decision had been made.”[2] The attack came on the Friday night.

The objection, and the answer

The sceptic’s argument was about access rather than accuracy: “And then he was like, how the [expletive] does this guy know? He’s been out of the CIA for 20 years. What are we supposed to believe that people who have access to the information just call him and offer it up?”[2]

Kiriakou’s reply was affirmative and gave a motive. “Yeah. They do. Because they’re opposed to war.”[3]

He placed the leaking inside a wider fracture: “There’s a major serious split in the American government over this,” a reading he supported with what he found on waking that morning — how many senators of both parties were condemning the attack.[3]

The other tell

The White House was not his only indicator. Reading a viewer’s note that a relative worked at Shannon Airport in Ireland, a refuelling stop for American troops bound for the Middle East, Kiriakou said he was reminded of a conversation the previous day with a friend in Cyprus, who told him something was happening at the British air base at Akrotiri — the British “don’t release any information, of course,” and in a century have never ceded any control of it to the Cypriots, but “she said something’s going on.”[4][5]

His response to her, by his account, was flat: “I said, ‘Oh, I can tell you what’s going on. We’re getting ready to bomb Iran.’ And there it is.”[5]

Two days out

On 25 February 2026, with the attack still forty-eight hours away and reports circulating that it had been meant to begin the previous weekend, Kiriakou was doubtful about the immediate timetable while holding to the underlying judgement.

His reading of the delay was institutional rather than diplomatic: “From the US military perspective, the longer they wait, the better, cuz they’ll have more assets in place and it’s easier.”[6]

The assessment fits what he said afterwards about why the war had not come a month or two earlier — that both the United States and Israel were short of munitions — and it is the same reasoning that made a massing of carrier groups, to him, evidence that the decision had already been taken.
