South Lebanon displacement, 2026 refers to the mass internal displacement of Lebanese civilians during the Israeli campaign in the south that ran alongside the 2026 Iran war.
The conditions were put to John Kiriakou in an interview: bombing that never stopped after the ceasefire, hundreds of civilian deaths, the use of white phosphorus with its long-term injuries and destruction of farmland, and an Israeli directive that fifty-three villages and towns in the south be evacuated — after which some 300,000 people left for Beirut and elsewhere, living in tents, in their cars, or with family.[1][2]
Asked how realistic the Greater Israel project was as far as Lebanon was concerned, Kiriakou answered in terms of statehood rather than territory: “I think that the Israelis have guaranteed that Lebanon will be a failed state. I don’t think any Israeli government is going to allow Lebanon to flourish as a nation.”[3]
The scale
He expected the campaign to continue — “Israeli attacks, Israeli forced displacement of civilians” — and cited a statistic he had read the previous day: “by the end of the week, as many as 700,000 Lebanese will be internally displaced.”[4]
His framing of why it drew so little attention is the war next door: “This is a humanitarian disaster and the world, most of the world isn’t focused on it because they’re all watching what’s unfolding in Iran.”[4] The baseline made it worse — Lebanon already lacked “enough food, enough medical care, enough clean water” — and his forecast was that “it’s only going to get worse.”[4][5]
In a separate appearance he put the figure at almost a million internally displaced with nowhere to go, “because they’re surrounded by Syria on two sides, Israel on one, and the Mediterranean Sea on the fourth.”[6]
