The indicator he’d be watching is John Kiriakou’s answer to a viewer who asked, on the first day of the 2026 war, what single sign would most alarm him if he were still inside the CIA.
He answered in five words: “The movement of ground forces.”[1]
The arithmetic
The reasoning is a comparison between what is deployed and what an invasion would require. “We we only have, I’m going to say, 50,000 troops in the region. You can’t invade a country of 92 million people with 50,000 troops.”[2]
The threshold he set is therefore an order of magnitude away: “If we started moving hundreds of thousands of troops to bases in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, I would be genuinely worried.”[2]
A second sign would come from the sea. “There’s also talk of of taking the the only other active um aircraft carrier strike force battle group that we have and moving it to the region. That would frighten me.”[2][3]
The framing matters to the rest of his commentary on the war: it makes the ground-force question, not the bombing, the measure of whether the conflict is escalating — and it is the same reasoning by which he had earlier read the massing of carrier groups as evidence that a decision to attack had already been taken.
The naval question beside it
Immediately before, a viewer asked whether Iran could use maritime drones against American ships the way Ukraine had against the Russian Black Sea fleet. Kiriakou called it “a good question, and it’s a hard question to answer,” and made the answer a matter of quantity: “If they have enough drones, yeah, they can make an impact.”[4]
Ships, he allowed, are “notoriously um excellent at defending themselves from incoming uh threats” — but the defence is finite. “A ship has only so many defensive missiles on it. If if you send a drone against a ship as the Iranians did a week ago, we’re going to shoot it down. If you send 500 drones against a ship, you can’t shoot all of them down.”[4][1]
